Stoupa Wap Site

WAP phones come in two flavours, basic phones, and advanced smart phones.

Basic phones will always put a link to another page (or action) on a separate line. Smart phones have much better displays, and will mix links and text on the same line. What this means is that screens designed for one type of phone, look awful on the other sort. This is not a problem, as I have a WAP site for each type of phone, and you can switch between them. It’s possible by program to detect the type of phone, and redirect to the correct type of site. My ISP does not let me run programs on their server, and I can’t justify the cost of a paid for site that would allow this. This is why you have to make the choice yourself on my site, whereas other sites will work it out for you. Note, smart phones are likely to similar, as Nokia has licenced the technology to all the other big phone manufacturers.

Advanced phones also support colour pictures, and will let the WAP site call phone numbers (the phone checks with you first).

Examples of smart phones are the Nokia 7650 and 3650. Examples of basic phones are Nokia 6210, and 3330. Got a 7650? If so check out the hidden extras! They are probably on the 3650 as well.

So what’s on the site? At the top of the home page, are two select boxes, The first lets you swap between the Advanced and the Basic site. The second lets you specify what happens when you select a phone number; Do you want to be given the option to call the number, or do you just want it displayed? The default for the advanced site is call the number, the default for the basic site is just to display it. If you are on the basic site and choose Call number you will get a warning, and the selection will return to Show number, just select it a second time to make the change.

About the pictures. The ones on the Pictures page match the 176 width display of smart phones. The pictures on the Gallery page are some of the thumbnails from Stephan’s Site . The thumbnails are a little smaller than ideal.

The 7650 sometimes decides to give you a History button instead of a Back button. I always add a Back or a Home choice to the menu give by Options. On some phones this will just be shown mixed in with the other options, on the 7650, it is listed under Service Options. As you can see, I give other options too.

Move your mouse over the names of the pictures on the left hand side screen scrape to see the picture displayed in the right hand side screen scrape.

You can also move the mouse over the names of these pictures added 18 November:

It‘s here. The WAP Stoupa Web Cam.

On an advanced phone, there is really not much point in setting the Show number mode, as the number is shown before it is called.

Note that there is an option to have the numbers in Greek internal format. You must not use this if you are abroad in Greece, use the international format. The Greek format is for phones registered on a Greek network only. So if you are a UK Vodafone user on the Panafon network, use the international format.

The addresses for the WAP sites are (case sensitive):
Advanced: http://www.stephenwaring.btinternet.co.uk/Stoupa.wmlc
Basic: http://www.stephenwaring.btinternet.co.uk/StoupaBasic.wmlc
If I can work out how to get the character set encoding working, I hope to have different language versions of the wap site.

Thanks are due to Stephan, the wap site works in partnership with the Stoupa Web site.

I’m sorry, but I’ve yet to find a web based WAP browser that supports WmlScript, so you won’t be able to view this site’s pages from the Internet.

Problems with, or suggestions for:
The Wapsite,
The Stoupa Web Site,

There are not as many options on a basic phone. You also have to scroll down more, to see less.
